With physical echoes of actor Gerard Depardieu, wide-shouldered French painter Jean Claude Roy enjoys a certain elite celebrity in our country, represented chiefly by Grand Bohemian Hotel, a franchise which includes Asheville's imposing version in Biltmore Village. The self-described "expressionist-colourist" uses oils and a palette knife to create memorably sun-drenches canvases of great emotion and fierce-but-dreamlike intent. His latest stateside tour is a brief fling across the Southeast, bringing him to Asheville Oct. 28 and 29 to open a new series of works at the Grand Bohemian Gallery.
A special "Dinner with Jean Claude Roy" (only in Asheville) happens Friday night from 6-9 pm at the hotel (11 Boston Way). ($99 per person, 828-398-5555.) The official artist's reception is Saturday, 5:30-8:30 pm.
