It's billed as the highest car show east of the Rockies, and at a 4000-foot-plus elevation, that's right on track. But the news concerning the fourth annual Highlands Motoring Festival has more to do with its length (it's expanded to three days, July 15-17) and breadth of activities. The event comes fully loaded this year, including a Friday-night cruise-in, a "Ladies Poker Run" on Saturday, slot-car tracks for kids, and a Sunday brunch event. Live entertainment will be part of the fun Saturday, and most events are free to the public.
Preview photos of 16 of this year's stunners have been released, including a raspberry-hued ’54 Muntz Road Jet, a '38 BMW 328, a '56 Ford F100 pickup truck, and a 1928 Dodge Brothers sedan. Fun fact: the '52 Chevy Bel Air that took home "Best of Show" honors in the festival's first year had its initial star turn in the film "Driving Miss Daisy." Both participant judging and a people's-choice award are on the roster for this weekend.
"The show began as an effort to promote Highlands and the surrounding area, the merchants in the area, and show off some of the area's best cars," says spokesman Steve Mehder. Besides making the event weekend-long, coordinators have, he says, "expanded the geographical area as well. Since the benefiting charity is the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, we will have a 'trivia road rally' that will allow people new to the area to experience some of the best roads and scenery [here], including many of the local waterfalls."
