On the Rise
Flourishing architects Anca Matyiku and Robert Ivanov are recognized for their kinetic and symbiotic design
architectural rendering by Robert Ivanov
Earlier this month, Doug Hecker, discipline leader of the architectural component of HATCH (the Asheville festival combining mentors and young talent in various design media), helped choose the winners of the Groundbreakers competition. The contest's theme, "Design for Action," echoed the spirit of Hecker's own work with his nonprofit 10^10, which seeks a cornice of visionary aesthetics with social justice.
Anca Matyiku of Montreal was picked for her "Weather Station" project, the formation of buildings that are "dialectically engaged" -- i.e. intentionally and positively transformed -- by outdoor elements, rather than built to counteract them. LABscape co-founder Robert Ivanov, based in New York, was also honored. His urban architecture/design/landscape collective is concerned with "new programmatic relationships" to execute environmentally responsible construction. Although heavy on digital-manipulation techniques to reduce land disruption, LABscape pays keen attention to cultural vernacular in its international work
