A Picasso of One's Own

Winner of winter fundraiser gets etching by modern master

Pablo Picasso,

Pablo Picasso, "Self Portrait 1907"

www.tcarts.orgPablo Picasso, whose name is as synonymous with modern art as Crayola is with crayon, had his notorious "blue period." But Transylvania Community Arts Council in Brevard will brighten the midwinter doldrums when it hosts its annual fundraiser, bestowing a breathtakingly valuable prize worth more than $28,000. "Enlèvement, à cheval" ("Abduction on Horseback") was created by the master in his nineties. The etching arose during Picasso's brief but fertile "347 Series," about which he once observed: " “I spend hour after hour while I draw, observing my creatures and thinking about the mad things they’re up to; basically it’s my way of writing fiction.” "Cheval," created at Picasso's private studio in Cannes in collaboration with printers Piero and Aldo Crommelynck, comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Park West Gallery an original invoice of purchase. (The piece is owned by a local resident whose wish was to see "Cheval" stay in the community.) The raffle will be held Feb. 12 as part of the Heart of Brevard's "Dancing With Our Stars" event. Proceeds benefit TC Arts Council's numerous youth programs. Tickets are $100; only 600 of them will be sold. Call (828) 884-2787 or see www.tcarts.org for more information.
