STYLISH LIVING IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA

Shades of Scheherazade
Covered Deck by Benson & Babb Interiors

The tradition of storytelling has touchstones in every corner of the globe. From the 1001 Arabian Nights to Isak Dinesen delighting Denys Finch Hatton with her improvisations in Kenya to the Cherokee’s fireside fables, all that’s required is a vivid imagination, an intimate setting and a touch of mystery.
Ashley Smith, Margaret Siler and Lynn Critcher have set the stage for weaving tales — or sharing secrets — on this engaging covered deck. Drawing on the palette of the surrounding woodlands, they have added some oriental spice for an atmosphere that is appropriate, yet exotic.
“It’s earthy but has a lot of refinement,” says Lynn. “All the fabrics are practical, outdoor fabrics. Weatherproof in some way. That makes it easy to live with.”
The showpiece is the ornate macramé hammock, festooned with lush cushions and worthy of Scheherazade herself. The languid curves of the surrounding seating group invite the audience to settle in and let themselves be swept away, while the painted Japanese chest speaks of far-off places. Corner curtains give the impression of enclosure (a Bedouin tent, perhaps?) without obstructing the enclave of trees beyond.
It all comes together in this enchanted place, where warm summer nights call you to light the candles, pour the wine and invoke the magic phrase “Once upon a time…”
