STYLISH LIVING IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA

Simply Sublime
Master Suite by Pleasant Surroundings

As any fan of the classic Tiffany solitaire engagement ring will point out, a simple setting is often the best way to showcase a lovely gem. In the case of this master bedroom suite, designers Amy Elkins, Anne Marie Blitch and Marina Zanowski have chosen exquisite textiles and given them a backdrop that truly showcases their beauty.
The jewel in the crown, presented on a discreetly elegant iron bed, is the one-of-a-kind bedspread — an opulent, but organically patterned tapestry in surprising hues of eggplant and sage. “That drove the wall color and the overall theme of the room,” says Anne Marie. To give the setting texture without creating competition, the team installed a nostalgic board and batten wall treatment and painted it in a soothing “Raintree Green.”
This neutral background put the focus on the fabrics, which were chosen to make the occupants feel pampered — lush oriental carpet underfoot, a luxurious mound of patterned pillows on the bed and luminous raw silk draperies, embellished with a delicate beaded leaf motif.
While the curtains on the large main windows are allowed to flow and pool, the two small side windows are capped with crisply tailored valences, set over woven wood shades, giving them the appearance of sculptural wall art.
With its subtle interplay of glorious textures and straightforward surfaces, the room feels indulgent without seeming overly feminine. “We were told early on that we had passed the ‘man test’ — that for a master suite to be successful, you had to have the gentleman’s approval,” Anne Marie observes.
And that makes it a rare jewel indeed.
